Pick any manufacturer from this list: Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volvo, Audi, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ford, Lincoln, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, Land Rover, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, or Alfa Romeo to name a few, and they either have at least one EV in their current range, or plan to within the next five years.
What about Tesla? They are already a 100% EV company, with a range of four models and plans for more, including a pick-up truck and semi-truck. Even if you’re resisting the EV movement as strongly as possible, chances are you will walk into a car showroom in a few years from now and be greeted by a sea of EVs to choose from. Don’t fight the waves. Gently float with them.
What's the Big Deal Over EVs?
The biggest factor about an EV is that there are no tailpipe emissions to create air pollution whilst they drive around. Whilst plug-in hybrids are cleaner than regular internal-combustion engines, they do have tailpipe emissions when their engines are running, whilst EVs do not have any – they don’t even have a tailpipe to speak of!
EVs are quiet, ghostly quiet. In fact, many EVs have sound-making devices on their exterior to emit audible sounds at low speeds so that pedestrians may be warned of their presence. Contrast that to the fact that any internal combustion engined car is going to make some noise, no matter how quiet it is, and you can see that cities could be more peaceful places.
EVs can be thrilling to drive. The instantaneous torque characteristic of an electric motor means that it produces maximum twist just as its shaft starts to rotate – from zero rpm basically. This can send you rocketing off the line whilst your internal combustion engined rivals look on in envy until their turbochargers spool up and their transmissions shift up. Want to emit copious clouds of tire smoke? EVs can do that very easily, due to the instantaneous torque.
EVs are smooth to ride in as there is no linear motion being converted into rotary motion as in an internal combustion engined vehicle. There are no tingles or vibrations at certain RPM ranges, or jolts as an internal combustion engine stops and starts.
How Long Does it Take to Charge an EV?
There are three types of EV charger. Level 1 EV Chargers are the basic ones that you find bundled with your EV and plug into a domestic socket. They can take over 8 hours to charge an EV battery, as their power output is typically around 1.2 kilowatts per hour. This may work for some people, but the majority will want some nippier charging.
Enter Level 2 EV Chargers. These bad boys can pump juice to your EV at a rate approaching 7 kilowatts per hour. We at EVSOL Energy are experts at Level 2 EV Charger installations. Installing a charger is a one-off charge, really. There are periodic inspection and servicing requirements, but you will barely feel a dent in your wallet for these.
Level 3 EV Chargers are even faster, and found in EV charging stations, such as those run by BC Hydro. Level 3 EV Chargers can offer rates of 25, 50 or even 100 kilowatts per hour. These are blazing fast speeds, and if your car supports these speeds, chances are you could park it with a nearly empty battery and go off for a nice lunch, only to return to a fully charged car.
How Much Will it Cost to Charge My EV?
The cost of charging your EV will depend on your electricity rates, which are typically determined on a kilowatt-hour basis. A Level 2 EV Charger will take less time to charge your EV, whilst a slower Level 1 EV Charger will take more time, however, the absolute cost of the charging may be very similar. If anything, the faster charge may be slightly more costly, as there will be a higher proportion of energy wasted as heat in the conversion process.
If you’re planning to charge at an EV fast charging station, the cost will determine on the pricing structure of the station. As a guide, BC Hydro offers three charging rates of 25kWh, 50kWh and 100kWh at their charging stations, and they charge on a per second basis, with tariffs provided per minute. The 25kWh charge costs a mere 12 cents per minute, the 50kWh charge will run you 21 cents per minute whilst if you plump for the full monty with the 100kWh charge, your outlay will be 27 cents per minute.
Of course, you need to bear in mind that a faster charging rate means that you will spend less time at the charger, although your car should support the faster charging rate, and as your battery fills up, the battery management system will automatically reduce the charging rate to protect the battery. It will also do this if the battery temperature rises above pre-determined levels.
What this means is, you can’t simply plug in a 100kWh charger to your car and expect it to charge at a flat 100kWh all the way to full. There are many variables at play, and these could affect your charging time, and consequently, your final charging bill.
Needless to say, regardless of how long it takes, or which option you pick, fully charging your car will still cost less than a fill-up at a gas station, and your cost-per-mile will be lower as a result. How much lower? 50% lower is a popular middle-of-the-road figure that we’ve seen around. That’s significant.
