5 Common Mistakes EV Owners Have to Avoid

If you've read our previous blog article on the CleanBC Roadmap to 2030, you might have seen that the predictions are that we will all be compelled to drive EVs in the near future. Many manufacturers including Chevrolet, Ford, Cadillac, Hummer, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, Volkswagen, Jaguar, Land Rover, Nissan, and Honda have, or are planning to release EVs in the near future, and you can find names such as Tesla and Rivian who only offers EVs.

If you're already an EV driver looking to upgrade, you have already jumped on the bandwagon, kudos. If you're an existing EV owner and wondering why you're EV isn't charging quickly, chances are it's the charger. If you're looking to buy your first EV, or considering upgrading to a newer model, here's a list of five common mistakes that EV owners tend to make. Read on, do some supplementary research, and be in the know when you go to sign on the dotted line and drive off from the showroom.

Mistake 1: Assuming It Will Charge at the Maximum Rate Advertised

You might have seen EV manufacturers proclaiming that their EVs charge in the blink of an eye, getting you back on the road faster. Impressive, isn’t it? Hold that thought. Whilst these are maximum possible rates of charge, you might not be able to achieve such rates in practice. Faster charging requires dedicated charging infrastructure such as a Level 2 EV Charger. This isn’t as simple as plugging your EVinto a domestic socket and calling it a day, in fact the domestic socket option is far slower.

Mistake 2: Not Asking Questions About Rebates at Purchase

Governments all over the world are encouraging their citizenry to purchase EVs, and they do this through multiple methods. One of those is rebates and incentives. Did you know that you could be eligible fot a rebate, incentive, or tax credit if you buy an EV? For example, BC Hydro can probide you a rebate up to $3,000 if you purchase a new battery electric vehicle (BEV/EV) and up to $1,500 if you purchase a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV). There are also Federal vehicle rebates up to $5,000 off. With these potential rebates, you'd be naïve if you didn't take advantage of them. Ask questions, do your research, and identify which vehicle models quality before stepping onto a showroom. Why not save some money if you're entitled to?

Mistake 3: Keeping Up With the Joneses

Did you see a shiny new EV on your neighbour’s driveway and decide to compete by buying a bigger and faster model? Hold that thought. Take a step back. Breathe. Do you really need an EV that can carry seven people if the only users are you and your significant other? Likewise, do you need the one that can accelerate from zero to sixty in a neck-snapping two seconds if you’re the sort of driver who doesn’t like to depress the accelerator pedal more than halfway, or doesn’t feel comfortable venturing within 5mph of the speed limit? Buy an EV that best fits your requirements, not simply to impress others.

Mistake 4: Over Estimating Range Requirements

Range is a major concern among EV owners, since many EVs top out at around 500km or 310 miles. Whilst this may seem miniscule since internal combustion engined vehicles can top up their range in around five minutes at the nearest gasoline or diesel pump, it’s not all that bad. After all, do you really drive 300 miles daily? The typical EV owner on the daily commute may drive approximately 50 miles, meaning that they will need to fully charge the vehicle once every six days. A typical usage scenario sees the owner plug the charging cable into their car when
home, typically overnight. The car is smart enough to switch off the charging circuitry when the battery is full and maintain trickle charging. In hindsight, an EV with a 150-mile range would provide a pretty decent cushion for a person who drives an average of 50 miles daily.

Going on a longer trip with the family, luggage, and pets in tow? You have two options. One is to plan your overnight stops at places with EV charging facilities, which are becoming increasingly common. Ensure that you call ahead and book a charger in advance if possible, or at least inform the Management of your requirement beforehand. The other option is to rent a traditional internal combustion engined car, or a plug-in hybrid for your trip.

Mistake 5: Range Isn't Constant

You might have read Mistake 4 and thought “hang on, why are they saying a 150-mile range EV is pretty decent for someone who drives 50 miles a day and charges every night? They’ve got their math wrong”. Dear reader, there’s another factor to account for. Range isn’t constant. Your 150-mile EV might be able to truck it out for 170 miles on one day and run out of juice in 100 miles the next day.

Simple. External conditions. Let’s say your drive is on a pleasant Sunday, during daylight hours and you’re cruising along, listening to your favourite music. You haven’t activated the climate control as the temperature is just perfect. You don’t need the headlamps or foglamps as it’s bright daylight. You’re not in a hurry, you’re driving below the speed limit with smooth throttle inputs, coasting gently with regeneration, and it’s all hunky dory. 170 miles of range is your displayed range.

The next day you have to head home from work at 6pm, and darkness has fallen. A snowstorm has blown in too, and it’s below freezing outside. Worse, there’s moderate traffic on the roads and you want to get home as quickly as possible. You’re driving fast. Easing above the speed limit, stopping, and starting with a heavy right foot. You’ve got the heater cranked to maximum, the heated front and rear windshields are working as well as the heated seats and heated steering wheel. Your headlamps and foglamps are switched on, as are your front and rear wipers. Unknown to you, the car needs to maintain it’s battery at an optimum temperature as well, and the battery’s temperature management system is working to that effect. 100 miles of range is displayed. This is the variable nature of the EV – range can vary drastically based on the ancillaries that are switched on, as well as environmental conditions.
